The 1953 Corvette was the American car designed to fulfill the yearnings of soldiers returning from war. While overseas, some men fell in love with a woman, others fell in love with a mechanical sweetheart, the European sports car. Chevrolet’s fiberglass two-seater was the first, mass- produced, American sports car, but it almost shifted itself right out of production. Initially, it was equipped with an automatic transmission, not a sporty stick.
