To be a Cubs fan is to be part of the most miserable legacy in all of sports. My grandmother Nettie Becker knew this but never gave up in her 104 years of being a fan. My dad, just like his dad before him too, and cousins know this but all still have hope. We adopt the mindset of wait until next year. We adopt the mantra that anybody can have a bad century. It’s why when we see a spark in a Cubs team it ignites a delusional sense of this could be the year.
Way back in 1989 my dad and I saw that spark and wrote the first Cubbies are Rockin’ on a road trip to San Francisco on the way to see them play the Giants. We were, of course, left bitterly disappointed. We saw that same spark in 2003 and all know what happened then. This year though something feels different. These guys are too young to know better right? Theo Epstein did it in Boston so why he can’t do it for us, right? Well here we are again, with that silly belief that this could be our year and we’ve written another song to try and express that delusional feeling again because this could be our year...right?
