Originally a world-renowned and enormously profitable tractor company, Lamborghini’s foray into road racing cars came after he was insulted by Enzo Ferrari himself! It seemed perfectionist engineer and entrepreneur, Ferruccio Lamborghini was not completely happy with his Ferrari, and let Enzo know. Ferrari dismissed “the tractor builder,” which only enraged Ferruccio. The latter disassembled his prized car only to find it was built using many of the same parts utilized in his tractors, except at four times mark up.
By 1964 Lamborghini introduced the 350 GT, followed by their groundbreaking Miura. They then added two other models—Espada and Islero. Although they were innovators, by 1979 they went bankrupt, and were sold several times. Luckily in 1998 Audi, with whom they’d been working with, purchased the company and helped develop some of their most important cars; the Murcielago and “baby Lambo” named Gallardo.
