Between 1968 and 1996 The Dick Cavett Show aired in various formats on ABC, CBS, PBS, USA Network and CNBC. Over the years Cavett welcomed roughly 10,000 guests including some of the most interesting figures in film, theatre, sports, music, literature, art and politics. But the show might also feature a notorious underworld figure or a reptile expert. The Dick Cavett Show was certainly diverse.

The Cavett show developed a reputation as the intelligent alternative to the standard, more lightweight television fare of the time. Cavett encouraged discussion of controversial topics. As the war in Vietnam escalated, Cavett hosted famous and ordinary antiwar protesters as well as government officials with a pro-war agenda. During the Watergate scandal Cavett talked with politicians from both sides of the political aisle, and later found himself a topic of discussion on Richard Nixon’s infamous White House tapes.

Cavett’s interview style was greatly influenced by his former employer Jack Paar. Cavett began his television career as a writer for Paar on The Tonight Show. (Cavett continued as a Tonight Show writer when Johnny Carson took over the show in 1962.) When Cavett was about to begin his own show Paar advised him to make his interviews more like conversations. The advice remained important to Cavett and the result is what set The Dick Cavett Show apart from other talk shows.

In this eight-show collection, Cavett talks with groundbreaking newscasters and producers Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, Diane Sawyer, Frank Reynolds, Don Hewitt, Morley Safer, Barbara Walters and Mike Wallace.

Walter Cronkite served as anchorman for the CBS Evening News for 19 years (1962–1981) and came to be known as “the most trusted man in America.” Tom Brokaw is a journalist and author, best known for being the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News for 22 years (1982–2004). He is the only person to have hosted all three major NBC News programs: The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and Meet the Press.

Diane Sawyer was the first female correspondent on 60 Minutes, and was a member of President Richard Nixon’s White House staff. She anchored or co-anchored 20/20, ABC World News, Good Morning America and Primetime. >strong>Barbara Walters is an author and television personality, best known for having hosted Today, The View, 20/20, and the ABC Evening News.

Dan Rather began his career in Texas and was on the scene of the Kennedy assassination in Dallas. During his long career with CBS News he was White House correspondent and the host of the CBS Evening News. Rather has won multiple Emmy® and Peabody Awards®.

Mike Wallace was an American journalist, game show host, actor, and media personality. He interviewed a wide range of prominent newsmakers during his seven-decade career, and was one of the original correspondents for 60 Minutes, when it debuted in 1968.
